Michigan Department of Transportation has the schedule for upcoming Road and Bridge Projects in the State of Michigan through 2021 and beyond.

Check it out, it may just be coming to a city near you!

I-75 Business Loop Resurfacing in St. Ignace

Start: May 2021     End: October 2021

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will resurface I-75 Business Loop (BL) from I-75 to High Street and from Antione Street to North Airport Road in St. Ignace, Mackinac County. This project will include cold milling, resurfacing, upgrading concrete sidewalk ramps to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, pavement markings, and reconfiguration of the existing lanes from four to three.

Q: How Traffic Will Be Affected:

The work will require lane closures with traffic regulators.

The Safety Benefit

Long-term benefits include improvements to vehicle safety and operations, including lane reconfigurations and a new pavement surface. Studies show that four to three-lane reconfigurations can reduce crashes by 19 to 47 percent.

I-75/LaPlaisance Road Interchange Rebuilding

Start: March 2021     End: November 2022

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be rebuilding the LaPlaisance Road bridge over I-75, along with the nearby and on and off ramps.

Q: How Traffic Will Be Affected:

Lane closures and detours will be announced closer to the beginning of work.

The Safety Benefit

The new bridge will be a part of the redesigned and rebuilt interchange that will include new roundabouts on each side of the bridge. These roundabouts will allow traffic to operate more smoothly and efficiently, and increase safety with fewer conflict points. For more information about roundabouts, go to www.Michigan.gov/Roundabouts.

I-69 Reconstruction, Calhoun & Eaton Counties

Start: September 2020     End: November 2023

Reconstruction of I-69 from 5,000 feet north of I-94 in Calhoun County to Island Highway in Eaton County. Reconstruction includes the ramps and collector distributors of the I-94/I-69 interchange. All ramps within the project limits will be reconstructed. Bridge work included on most bridges within the project limits.

Q: How Traffic Will Be Affected:

Lane closures and shifts on I-69 and I-94. Ramps will be intermittently closed and detoured. Potential road closures over I-69 to complete the bridge work.

I-75 Modernization, Oakland County

For up-to-date project information, visit the I-75 Modernization website at www.modernize75.com.

The I-75 modernization project encompasses approximately 18 miles of freeway from M-102 to south of M-59 and has a current daily traffic volume of 103,000 to 174,000. The freeway was built in the 1960s and has not received comprehensive corridor improvements. The need for increased capacity to relieve congestion is driven by the growth along the corridor due to land use changes and the migration of people, services, and industry. It is a critical commercial, commuter, and tourism route moving goods and services daily.

Proposed corridor improvements will ease traffic congestion, meet travel demand for personal mobility and movement of freight, while allowing for future traffic and commercial needs for the entire region. It will also improve motorist safety, reliability, and efficiency. The project is split up into three segments.

  • Segment 1: Coolidge Highway to South Boulevard, Design-Build Contract

Started in August 2016 and was completed in 2017. Reconstructed 3.3 miles, replaced six structures, and modernized the I-75/Square Lake Road (I-75 Business Loop) interchange.

  • Segment 2: North of 13 Mile to Coolidge Highway, Design-Build Contract

Started in fall 2018 with substantial completion in fall 2020. Project completion summer 2021. Reconstructed more than 8.5 miles, replaced/repaired 18 structures and built diverging diamond interchanges at Big Beaver and 14 Mile roads.

Segments 1 and 2 will include Michigan’s first High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane which is scheduled to open in fall 2023.

  • Segment 3: 8 Mile Road to North of 13 Mile Road, Design-Build-Finance-Maintain Contract

Started in winter 2019 with substantial completion expected in fall 2023. This segment will reconstruct 5.5 miles, replace 22 structures, remove 5 bridges and build a four-mile long drainage tunnel in the depressed section of freeway between 8 Mile and 12 Mile roads.

I-94/Pipestone Road Interchange Reconstruction

Start: December 2019    End: November 2023

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is planning to invest $50 million in I-94 road and bridge work between the St. Joseph River and Britain Avenue in 2022 and 2023. Several proposed adjustments to the Pipestone Road interchange (Exit 29) are provided in the documents below. The most significant proposed change is to route the westbound I-94 exit ramp to the existing Pipestone Road traffic signal at Mall Drive.

Design work starts in December 2019 and will involve examining alternative configurations for the westbound I-94 exit ramp that would maintain access to the Travelodge motel.

A series of stakeholder and other public events will be held to share information and collect input on ramp alternatives. The schedule for these events, including schematics showing major project features, will be added to this page as they become available. Design progress is underway with base plans expected to be available in spring 2020. Ramp closure and detours plans are expected to be available in fall 2020.

Q: How Traffic Will Be Affected:

Extended ramp closures will occur during interchange and bridge reconstruction work. Detour routes and the duration of ramp closures at the Pipestone Road (Exit 29) and Napier Avenue (Exit 30) interchanges will be determined during design. Drivers can expect two lanes of I-94 to be open in each direction during construction.

The Safety Benefit

Realigning the westbound I-94 exit ramp with the Pipestone Road traffic signal at Mall Drive is expected to improve traffic movement in this area, reducing crashes. The addition of an auxiliary lane on eastbound I-94 between Pipestone Road and Napier Avenue is expected to reduce crashes associated with ramp traffic merging onto I-94. Wider bridge shoulders and flatter ramps are also expected to reduce crashes at the interchange.

I-94 Road and Bridge Reconstruction, Jackson County

Start: Summer 2018     End: Spring 2024
Investment: $350 million

Local, national and international trade traffic on I-94 in Jackson has increased substantially since the freeway opened to traffic in 1960. The current corridor is, in part, functionally obsolete and is scheduled to be upgraded to current design standards in the next seven to 10 years. This Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) multi-year project will update this corridor, with the goal to balance safety, mobility, lifecycle costs, aesthetics, and environmental sustainability. All this work includes improvements identified in the I-94 Jackson Freeway Modernization Project study, which included a Record of Decision in March 2007

This project is broken down into three phases.

Phase 1 (2018 - 2020)

During this first phase, MDOT made the following improvements along I-94:

  • Rebuilt 1.4 miles of freeway between Lansing Avenue and Elm Road.
  • Resurfaced 3.5 miles between Lansing Avenue and M-60, and 4 miles between Elm Road and Sargent Road.
  • Rebuilt the I-94/Cooper Street interchange, built new roundabouts on each side of the new bridge, and rebuilt each of the ramps.
  • Replaced the I-94 bridge over the Grand River.

As part of this phase, I-94 was shifted approximately 60 feet south of its current location.

Phase 2 (Spring 2021 - Summer 2023)

In this phase, MDOT will rebuild portions of I-94 between the Airport Road interchange and the US-127 south interchange. Other improvements include:

  • Rebuilding the I-94/US-127/West Avenue interchange to be a diverging diamond interchange.
  • Rebuilding the Lansing Avenue bridge over I-94 to be higher and wider than the current bridge to accommodate the widening of I-94.
  • Rebuilding the I-94/Elm Avenue interchange to include roundabouts at the eastbound ramp terminal, the westbound ramp terminal, and the Rosehill Road/Elm Avenue/Seymour Road intersection.
  • Installing freeway lighting on I-94 from the Airport Road interchange to east of the Elm Road interchange to improve safety for motorists and first responders. This will include lighting on most ramps within the project limits.

Q: How Traffic Will Be Affected:

  • During work, two lanes will be open in each direction most of the time on I-94, with short-term single-lane closures possible at off-peak times.
  • The Lansing Avenue bridge will be closed and detoured while it is being rebuilt.
  • More information on specific traffic impacts will be provided in spring 2021 through a public meeting and this website.

Phase 3 (2022 - 2024)

Work in this phase will include:

  • Rebuilding approximately 12.5 miles of freeway from the Jackson/Calhoun County line to M-60.
  • Reconfiguring the Michigan Avenue interchange with the addition of roundabouts.
  • Reconfiguring the Dearing Road interchange with the addition of roundabouts.
  • Preventive maintenance on 10 bridges along the I-94 corridor.
