Nine local high school girls participated in a week-long camp sponsored by the Detroit Chapter 183 of the National Association of Women in Construction. The Mentoring A Girl In Construction (MAGIC) summer camp was held on the White Lake campus of Oakland Community College (OCC) in mid-July. The camp encourages girls to consider construction as a career path. During the week long camp the girls had the opportunity to develope some basic skills in the surveying, carpentry, electrical and plumbing trades.

On Friday the activites included surveying, operating a drill rigger to obtain soil samples and operating construction equipment. Klochko Equipment provided a Wacker Neuson Mini Excavator and Loader and the "hands on" instruction was provided by Local Operators Union # 324. This activity always proves to be one of the camp favorites. Klochko Equipment is honored to be part of such a worthwhile event that instills confidence and a personal sense of power to young girls.

As part of its 2012 camp, Detroit NAWIC partnered with OCC's construction management and Womencenter programs in recruiting girls from high schools in Detroit and surrounding communities. Camp directors included Carol Varga, Detroit Chapter NAWIC Past President; Melanie A. Myers, OCC Construction Management program coordinator and Lansing Chapter NAWIC President; and Arlene J. Frank, OCC Womencenter Program Coordinator.
