Tips on Winterizing Your Heavy Equipment
When Winterizing Equipment:
It is important that your taking steps to protect your equipment all year round. - Here are some tips that you can follow to ensure your equipment remains in tip top shape through the winter season especially.
Avoid Storing Machines Outside
Don't let the cold weather cause damage to the internal/external surfaces of your equipment. Be sure to brush the snow and ice off of the machines if left outside. Keep your machines stored in-doors to avoid engine fluids freezing if at all possible.
Machine Lubricants
Fill the fluid compartments with lubricants. Before powering up, check the transmission, hydraulic components, and oil tank. This is to ensure the fluid levels are optimal for the flow of the machine. Always be sure to check expiration dates on fluids.
Warm the Engine/Run the Engine
Warm the engine of your outdoor machines with a block heater, it can raise the temperatures of interior components and hydraulic fluid quickly. Let your machine warm up/idle before use.
Keep Batteries Charged and Warm
Keep your battery running efficiently by charging often, and when temps hit below freezing, take out the battery and store in doors.
Fill the Tires
Everybody knows when the temp drops, so does the air in your tires. Inspect each tire frequently to ensure that the tires are sufficiently filled and can withstand the weight of the machine.
Inspect
Cold weather can really put wear and tear on just about anything. Replace any parts immediately such as wires and hoses if you should find any abrasions/wear/cracks. Keep the machine in healthy shape by Inspecting the outer body, engine components and underside of the machine. Don't forget to make sure all parts are inside of the engine.
Refill
Refill the tank after each use to prevent the fuel tank from freezing overnight. Also, clean and drain the water separator after each use, in advance of the refill. This will help protect the fuel tank from the sediments such as dirt and water. Having a clean fuel system will ensure that your machine will be better-equipped to handle even the coldest of winter seasons.
Always remember to avoid touching metal surfaces with your bare skin in cold temps. Wear gloves and dress appropriately.
